Speaking to the Express at his Ravine Sable, Longdenville, home yesterday, the 61-year-old owner of a transport company said he believed the implementation of stand-your-ground legislation would protect law-abiding citizens. The homeowner said he and his wife were at home when four masked men entered around 7.15 p.m. when they were watching the news on television. He said the men, one armed with a gun, pulled into his driveway in a white-coloured MG sport utility vehicle. “I heard the horn blow and I walk out to see who it is, when I see some men jumping out a car. One point a gun at me and tell me to walk back inside the room,” he recalled, adding, the men shouted “where the money” and ransacked the house. “I had some money in the room, about $2,900, and I gave that to them—but they say that is not all the money, and they want the money,” he continued. Three of the men, he said, left the one-bedroom apartment, and went to the main house, where they broke a window, entered the property and ransacked the house. His son, who lives in the main house, was not at home at the time of the incident, he said. The intruders found $60,000, jewelry, cellphones, a battery charger, a cordless drill, and $2,000 in alcohol. Asked why the large sum of money was kept at home, he said his son had recently collected four hands of sou-sou and he had sold an engine from a truck. He believed the incident was not a random attack. “I believe it was a tip-off. The boy in the room with my wife and I told us that somebody sent them here, and if they ent get what they send them here for, the person who send them will have to pay the consequences,” he said. As a resident of Ravine Sable for 33 years, he said this was the first time he was a victim of crime. “I don’t feel safe here now. Every day something happening in this country. In a media release on November 24, the US embassy said the meeting will focus on the two nations’ strong bi-lateral relationship, strengthening regional stability and the vital importance to both countries of countering the illicit traffic in drugs and transnational criminal organisations. Caine's arrival in TT follows two recent visits by the US 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit to TT for military drills with the TT Defence Force. The USS Gravely, carrying members of the elite unit, arrived in TT from October 26-30. A second visit by the unit took place from November 16-21. US warships have been arriving in the Southern Caribbean since late August as part of an anti-drug trafficking operation, which has been supported by the TT government. However, the presence of the warships has been criticised by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro who has accused the US of seeking regime change and TT of facilitating such. Whe​n Tobago police responded to the murder scene back in November, they were led to a concrete track off Depot Road by residents to Brown’s body. A knife was observed in his back. Griffith, also a former police commissioner and TT Regiment captain, added he has been engaged in public service over the last 30 years. “Never in my life have I ever seen a politician who holds a position of authority in a government write to another country to revoke the visas of citizens in their own country,” Griffith said. Griffith, who was national security minister and a national security adviser at different times in Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s May 2010-September 2015 administration, said he was certain Persad-Bissessar “would not endorse a situation where we are in a position now to try to get politicians to write to other countries to take action against citizens of TT.” He said this could be perceived as a dog whistle for citizens who express views contrary to the government to be muzzled. Griffith added he did not think this was the case. He said people are entitled to their views and if they break the law, police can take action against them. In a release on November 21, Aboud questioned whether the government had a hand to play in the visa decision. In a response on the same day, Persad-Bissessar denied her government’s involvement in the visa revocation and said Aboud’s comments were reckless. Persad-Bissessar has publicly supported the deployment of US military personnel and officers to the southern Caribbean Sea, with the Trump administration’s description of this being an anti-narcotics exercise aimed at stopping narco-trafficking originating from Venezuela. The US Embassy in Port of Spain yesterday stated that Persad-Bissessar and Gen. Caine were expected discuss the two nations’ “strong bi-lateral relationship, strengthening regional stability, and regional unity on the vital importance of countering illicit trafficking and transnational criminal organizations. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar also yesterday acknowledged the visit. Stating that the meeting came at the request of the US government, and that details would be shared with the media after it occurred, Yesterday the New York Times reported on Caine’s visit to the region, stating that the reason for the trip was to thank US troops ahead of Thanksgiving. The Times reported that Caine has been a major part of the Operation Southern Spear, under which the US’ deployment of numerous warships, at least 15,000 troops and the USS Gerald R Ford aircraft carrier in Caribbean waters, has been named. The US has claimed that this build up and the 21 lethal boat strikes carried out in the region by the US military which have thus far killed 82 are part of an effort to stymie the flow of drugs in the region, and its effect on American citizens. But his visit comes as pressure on neighbouring Venezuela mounts, and on the heels of the conclusion of Joint exercises between the US 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) last week.
