Trump to Maduro: Leave Venezuela or Else

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine has already departed from Trinidad this afternoon after meeting with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and members of her Cabinet. Caine arrived in Trinidad on an official US aircraft this morning at the Piarco International airport, and met with Persad-Bissessar at the diplomatic centre in St Ann’s. Present at the meeting were Minister of Public Utilities Barry Padarath, Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander, Minister of Defence Wayne Sturge, and Attorney General John... Caine arrived in Trinidad on an official US aircraft this morning at the Piarco International airport, and met with Persad-Bissessar at the diplomatic centre in St Ann’s. Present at the meeting were Minister of Public Utilities Barry Padarath, Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander, Minister of Defence Wayne Sturge, and Attorney General John Jeremie. Details of what was discussed in the meeting have not yet been disclosed to the public. Caine however departed Trinidad shortly before 2.p.m. on the aircraft believed to be bound for Puerto Rico. Caine and Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Joint Chiefs of Staff David Isom had visited members of the US 346th Air Expeditionary Wing and Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 225, prior to the visit. He also visited the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70). The Joint Staff posted that Caine met with sailors underway in the Caribbean sea and thanked them for their professionalism and “continued, outstanding service during the Thanksgiving holiday season.” He also received updates from leadership and toured key spaces to gain a firsthand understanding of what the crew is accomplishing while underway. The US Embassy in Port of Spain yesterday stated that Persad-Bissessar and Gen. Caine were expected discuss the two nations’ “strong bi-lateral relationship, strengthening regional stability, and regional unity on the vital importance of countering illicit trafficking and transnational criminal organizations. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar also yesterday acknowledged the visit. Stating that the meeting came at the request of the US government, and that details would be shared with the media after it occurred, Yesterday the New York Times reported on Caine’s visit to the region, stating that the reason for the trip was to thank US troops ahead of Thanksgiving. The Times reported that Caine has been a major part of the Operation Southern Spear, under which the US’ deployment of numerous warships, at least 15,000 troops and the USS Gerald R Ford aircraft carrier in Caribbean waters, has been named. The US has claimed that this build up and the 21 lethal boat strikes carried out in the region by the US military which have thus far killed 82 are part of an effort to stymie the flow of drugs in the region, and its effect on American citizens. But his visit comes as pressure on neighbouring Venezuela mounts, and on the heels of the conclusion of Joint exercises between the US 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force (TTDF) last week. Griffith, also a former police commissioner and TT Regiment captain, added he has been engaged in public service over the last 30 years. “Never in my life have I ever seen a politician who holds a position of authority in a government write to another country to revoke the visas of citizens in their own country,” Griffith said. Griffith, who was national security minister and a national security adviser at different times in Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s May 2010-September 2015 administration, said he was certain Persad-Bissessar “would not endorse a situation where we are in a position now to try to get politicians to write to other countries to take action against citizens of TT.” He said this could be perceived as a dog whistle for citizens who express views contrary to the government to be muzzled. Griffith added he did not think this was the case. He said people are entitled to their views and if they break the law, police can take action against them. In a release on November 21, Aboud questioned whether the government had a hand to play in the visa decision. In a response on the same day, Persad-Bissessar denied her government’s involvement in the visa revocation and said Aboud’s comments were reckless. Persad-Bissessar has publicly supported the deployment of US military personnel and officers to the southern Caribbean Sea, with the Trump administration’s description of this being an anti-narcotics exercise aimed at stopping narco-trafficking originating from Venezuela. In a media release on November 24, police said a coordinated intelligence-led operation by the police and its partner agencies has resulted in the successful interception of a shipment of approximately 4.6 kilos of high-grade cannabis. Police said it received credible information on November 23 and following intelligence analysis, officers identified a location at the Port Authority, Dock Road,...
