Griffith: ‘Government shouldn’t ask others to revoke visas’
FORMER national security minister Gary Griffith has expressed concern over reports that Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander is seeking help from the US Embassy to revoke the visas of US-based social media users including bloggers, who have dual nationality, and who are targeting Trinidad and Tobago by spreading propaganda and fear.

Griffith’s concerns came against the background of Fisherman and Friends of the Sea’s secretary Gary Aboud’s US visa being revoked. Aboud claimed this happened because of his public opposition to government’s support of US military deployment in the southern Caribbean which began in August.
In a video posted on social media on November 24, Griffith said it was the right of any country to deny a visa to anyone who wishes to enter that country, if that person breached laws of that country.
Griffith, also a former police commissioner and TT Regiment captain, added he has been engaged in public service over the last 30 years.
“Never in my life have I ever seen a politician who holds a position of authority in a government write to another country to revoke the visas of citizens in their own country,” Griffith said.
Griffith, who was national security minister and a national security adviser at different times in Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s May 2010-September 2015 administration, said he was certain Persad-Bissessar “would not endorse a situation where we are in a position now to try to get politicians to write to other countries to take action against citizens of TT.”
He said this could be perceived as a dog whistle for citizens who express views contrary to the government to be muzzled. Griffith added he did not think this was the case.
He said people are entitled to their views and if they break the law, police can take action against them.
In a release on November 21, Aboud questioned whether the government had a hand to play in the visa decision.
In a response on the same day, Persad-Bissessar denied her government’s involvement in the visa revocation and said Aboud’s comments were reckless.
Persad-Bissessar has publicly supported the deployment of US military personnel and officers to the southern Caribbean Sea, with the Trump administration’s description of this being an anti-narcotics exercise aimed at stopping narco-trafficking originating from Venezuela.

The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government (MoRDLG) is urging citizens to remain on high alert as the Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) remains in effect for Trinidad and Tobago following a full day of inclement weather on Tuesday, November 25, which resulted in localized flooding and rapidly rising river levels in several communities.
The alert, issued by the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS), remains in effect until 9:00 p.m. today.
Although weather conditions showed some improvement in parts of the country earlier in the day, the Ministry warned that runoff from sustained rainfall has significantly increased water levels along the Caroni River, with levels expected to approach critical thresholds. Authorities cautioned that brief, localized overspill remains possible, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas of the lower Caroni Basin.
Smaller watercourses and drains may also become overwhelmed during periods of heavy rainfall, particularly near the time of high tide at approximately 7:03 p.m.
The Ministry confirmed that localized street and residential flooding occurred in areas within the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation (PDRC) and the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation (SGRC). These incidents were described as short-term, and water levels have since begun to subside. At this time, there has been no significant or widespread impact reported.
Additional incidents recorded throughout the day included:
A fallen tree along the North Coast Road, Maracas Bay within the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation
A fallen utility pole along Siparia Old Road in the Siparia Borough Corporation
In both cases, Disaster Management Unit (DMU) teams and relevant response agencies were swiftly deployed, and the affected roadways have since been **cleared and are now fully

On November 16, the United States designated the Cartel de los Soles as a foreign terrorist organization, adding it to the State Department foreign terrorist organization list and enabling new sanctions targeting Maduro's assets. Known as a decentralized network within Venezuela's armed forces, the Cartel de los Soles has long been linked to drug trafficking; the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned it in July, saying President Nicolás Maduro and allies bent state power to aid trafficking. More than 80 people have been killed in U.S. strikes on suspected trafficking boats, and commercial airlines including Iberia, TAP, LATAM, Avianca and GOL suspended flights after FAA warnings, with Turkish Airlines canceling November 24 to 28 services. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the designation gives a whole bunch of new options, declining to provide details, and officials say the designation could offer legal cover for potential direct military action. Seventy percent of Americans oppose U.S. military action in Venezuela, while President Nicolás Maduro and Maduro's government denied the charges and called the accusation a `ridiculous fabrication` Monday.

WEST INDIES batsmen got stuck in on day one of their two-day warm-up match against a New Zealand XI at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln University, on November 25, as the visitors closed on 346 for five at stumps.
With the match serving as vital preparation for West Indies ahead of their three-match Test series against the Kiwis, which bowls off on December 1, the top order showed good form after the regional team won the toss. Tagenarine Chanderpaul (85 off 211 balls), Brandon King (79 off 91), John Campbell (68 off 98) and Kavem Hodge (55 not out off 102) all scored fifties in a strong batting display.
Campbell and Chanderpaul set the tone in their 130-run opening partnership, with the former being the aggressor as he struck nine fours and a six before being caught at mid-off from the bowling of left-arm pacer Thomas O'Connor (one for 31). King then showed his intent early with a couple of stylish cover drives to the boundary, and he and Chanderpaul took the regional team to Tea without further loss as the score moved to 207.
Chanderpaul struck five fours and two sixes in his innings, which was retired at the Tea interval as he made way for Hodge, who's hoping to suit up in his first Test since the tour of Pakistan in January. After scoring 12 boundaries in a breezy innings, King was the next man to be dismissed when he was caught and bowled by leg-spinner Rahman Hekmat (one for 84) as the Windies slipped to 251 for three. Middle-order batsman Alick Athanaze didn't stick around for long and made a cameo of 23 off 34 balls before he was dismissed by Toby Hart (one for 28).
Hodge and wicket-keeper/batsman Tevin Imlach (25 off 46) then added 68 runs for the fifth wicket before the latter was bowled by left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox with what turned out to be the final ball of the day's play as he went for an extravagant cover drive.

A Rockley Vale, Scarborough man has appeared in court charged with the murder of American tourist Christopher Brown, 43, a builder of Silverthorne, Colorado.
Kylelon Sandy appeared before Master Whitney Franklin. He was represented by Karlson Brooks while the state was represented by Sgt Raegen Ramanan, attorney with the Homicide Bureau of Investigations. Sandy was remanded into custody to return to court on September 22, 2026.
Sandy was charged after DPP Roger Gaspard, SC, gave instructions on December 4.
Brown was said to be vacationing in Castara on Novermber 26 with his girlfriend when he was stabbed in the back. He had earlier had dinner at a restaurant and was walking to another bar nearby when he was attacked.
An autopsy on Brown on December 2 at the Scarborough Mortuary determined his death was as a result of stab wounds to his back.
When Tobago police responded to the murder scene back in November, they were led to a concrete track off Depot Road by residents to Brown’s body. A knife was observed in his back. His body was subsequently identified by his girlfriend Ellie Peck of Roaring Fork in Colorado.
